WHAT'S INCLUDED?

In this workbook, we include all the kit you need to get started. With all the gear in one place, you're ready to go straight out of the box. The materials included in this workbook are:

In our easy going sessions, we start from the very beginning. In the 2 and a half hours, we cover the fundamentals of this modern and versatile style of calligraphy, using a dip pen and a pot of ink. We'll learn the entire alphabet; upper and lower case alphabets then we'll progress onto joining up those individual letters to create words and phrases - we work on different papers to see how the ink reacts to glossier paper plus black ink on brown paper looks pretty lovely! From here, we delve into the layout elements of hand lettering - looking into varying ways to put your designs on paper (not only on a straight line!) along with the use of ornaments to shape our designs and bring some pop! Take some time away from our screens and pick up a pen - possibly a new pen, a pen we haven't held before - a dip pen! In our workshops, we use a metallic nib and to get the desired effect of lovely calligraphy, we simply dip the nib into a pot of ink - a method rather therapeutic in itself. Once we have the hang of the core technique - we work through the individual letters of the alphabet and joining of the words to then spacing and layout, plus a couple of ornaments here and there!

BULLET JOURNALS & PLANNERS

Plan with me - September // Mellor and Rose / Mellor & Rose

As we’re nearing the end of August - we thought we’d brainstorm some ideas for next month’s spread in our notebook. Here’s a look at what we’re thinking.

We usually start off our month on the left page, as our eyes move from left to right, and this also keeps a loose structure for each month. This also helps us when jumping through the months. Plus, it’s a full double spread which gives us a distinctive starting point! The second page, on our right, is usually our overview page of big calendar space where we can jot down a few events and have a quick look at where we’re heading - it also eases us into the full month of varying tasks and goals.

Then, we move onto the more segmented pages - which have a lot of varying and rather crucial content for us. This page is usually fairly full - with short term and long term goals along with a couple of areas to look at/ keep an eye on for the month. We usually include more brush lettering to break up the rhythm of ‘the to do lists’ bringing a lighter feel. We’ll add more display pages with full page lettering (as it’s what we love to do!). Usually a motivational quote here and there keeps us all going and is always a relaxing one to letter.

The theme for September is autumnal - our first ages says September in big lettering just to make it super obvious which month we’re in - which is useful when flicking through the pages. For this month, we’re using a lot of browns, light browns - more like a burnt orange along with the trusty black Tombow!

For the first page of the month (see snap below), we’ve aligned the design in the centre of the page with our illustration positioned underneath the lettering. We can also place the illustration (sprig etc.) at the left or right of the lettering with our lettering slighting off centre but the overall design layout with be central. We’ve complimented the brush script style of ‘September’ with sans serif as to keep the emphasis on ‘September’.

Plan with me - September // Mellor and Rose / Mellor & Rose

Our first calendar of the month is big - it catches the eye simply because of the scale. We usually don’t add too much colour as to not distract us from the more important and functional elements of our notebook; such as keeping track of our deadlines/ appointments.

Putting things in boxes automatically separates things in our mind. This helps us focus on specific tasks in hand - ones which require our attention. A good one for goals! Plus, we have a bit more lettering to both fill the space and also if we have just a load of boxes on the page, it can become a little repetitive.

WEDDING CALLIGRAPHY EVENING

by Lucy Mellor

Wedding Calligraphy & Modern Calligraphy at Mitton Hall // James Places with Mellor and Rose in Clitheroe // Mellor&Rose

We were incredibly excited during our drive up to Clitheroe earlier this week to host our first Modern Calligraphy workshop at Mitton Hall; one of Ribble Valley's finest and most beautiful wedding venues.

We had all our gear, chalkboards, picture frames and perhaps just under 100 pieces of paper (seriously. no joke.) for our upcoming Modern Wedding Calligraphy workshop at Mitton Hall in Clitheroe, Ribble Valley. We were very much looking forward to our workshop as we'd been at Holmes Mill the previous week hosting mini calligraphy and lettering demo's for everyone and anyone passing by during the Wedding Showcase - so this really got us in the Wedding spirit! This was our second workshop in Clitheroe as we hosted our Christmas Calligraphy workshop at Holmes Mill last year in the stunning Food Hall.

Whilst at Mitton Hall - I had a wander around the grounds at it was a lovely evening with glorious light - which made the evening's session even that more ambient and only slow dimming later on in the evening when we were finishing up.

Scroll to see what we got up to...

In our 3 hour Modern Calligraphy workshop at Mitton Hall, we covered all the basics of handletttering; learning the fundamentals and understanding the varying pressures and pace to achieve this characteristic lettering style we see on so much beautiful wedding stationery. We started with the upper and lower alphabet to learn the shapes of the letter which prides us with the base for you to put your own spin on the designs. From here, once we got the hang of things and our confidence grew from first picking up the dip pen - we gradually processed onto the wedding themed lettering, designs and stationery items which focused on joining up the individual letters and introducing layout to lettering - as lettering and calligraphy isn't only perfecting that same letter over and over again.

We then looked at bigger designs on A4 sheers which are great for signs and boards can the basis of larger lettering can lead to more scaled up designs which can be accompanied by a table plan or order of the day.

There really is no limit to what you can get up to with lettering - we're never limited to paper; chalkboards are booming in popularity - we've been lettering on chalkboards for a while as we're big fans of white ink on dark card/ board (that contrast!) and unpainted wood is making a surge too! If you're planning on writing your own wedding stationery we have a number Modern Wedding Calligraphy workshops coming up across the North West.

Cedar Farm has been a hub for artisans and creatives for both locals and people travelling to Mawdesley near Ormskirk since 1987.

Cedar Farm Gallery and Frame Shop sells soaps, cards, jewellery, crockery, toys and a big selection of art materials which are all useful for our workshops. These include Winsor and Newton calligraphy and drawing ink, posca liquid chalk pens along with pads of black and white paper.

Cedar Farm Galleries is where all the local artisan and independent shops are located. Whether looking for a gift for a loved one or a treat for yourself! Along with the various shops, there are lots of crafts and art based workshops on offer to get your creative juicing going in both the courses room and the gallery.

But if you're more in the mood for food, the monthly Farmers Markets may be more down your street - can't get much better than local produce!

Modern Calligraphy & Brush Lettering workshops at Cedar Farm Galleries with Mellor and Rose in Mawdesley

On our latest workshop, we hosted our Introductory Brush Lettering in a new room for us; the courses room in the Pig Barn! A brill space with plenty of soothing natural light and not to mention plenty of elbow room. The Pig Barn is also home to a hairdressers, glass makers and beautician which gives a nice vibe throughout.

In our Brush Lettering workshops with Beverley Mellor and Polly Mellor of Mellor and Rose at Cedar Farm, we learn all the basics of this stylish on-trend lettering style; how to use a Tombow ABT Brush Pen, form strokes and letters from our full upper and lower alphabets sheets.

During the workshop, we'll learn in detail the fundamental technique by understanding the pressure techniques used to produce the characteristic contrasting lettering style.

Alongside learning the basics of this modern lettering style, we'll delve into the design and layout elements of lettering - spacing and sizing of lettering and words to make a truly aseptically pleasing piece of art.

With full modern calligraphy alphabet from trace to letters - by the end of the workshop you will be well on your way to creating your own great brush lettering.

We had a lovely full workshop on Thursday evening at Cedar Farm - a couple of familiar faces along with plenty of new calligraphers! A brill start for everyone, especially with no lettering experience before coming to the workshop.

We're already looking forward to seeing your designs and putting your own twist on the pieces!

Every year for the past 4 years, Warton Hall in Lytham St Annes has opened their family garden to the public for National Garden Scheme which “raises impressive amounts of money for nursing and health charities through admissions, teas and cake” each and every year.

100’s of gardens across the country spruce up their bluebells and open their gardens to raise money for various charities. During their time, craft and arts workshops are hosted in the grounds to add to the schedule of what’s on offer.

For the past 3 years, we’ve hosted our Beginners Modern Calligraphy workshop in Warton Hall’s arts studio where personal projects and a variety of workshops take place during the 4 days.

With floristry workshops with local florists Bond and Bloom, yoga, candle making along with water colour painting sessions - there is plenty to do and get stuck in with!

With another year done and dusted, we thoroughly enjoyed being part of the week and also what it represents.

Check out all the open gardens for next year and have a slice of cake while you’re there!

Mindful Calligraphy with Mellor & Rose

ONE WAY TO SLOW DOWN

by Lucy Mellor

01 / 05 / 2019

Mindful Calligraphy & Lettering workshops with Mellor & Rose in Lancashire/ Yorkshire/ Merseyside

At our workshops we start from the very beginning - covering the basic fundamentals of this modern yet versatile lettering style. We learn the entire upper and lower alphabets then move onto forming words and onto stylised phrases in a variety of design layouts. Which all demonstrate the possibilities with your lettering!

During our relaxed workshops, we have been told people find learning calligraphy relaxing and begin to slow down, clearing their mind of the mundane - calligraphy is a form of practising mindfulness without consciously acknowledging it!

Practising mindfulness comes in a whole variety of forms but with calligraphy, the main areas are naturally encouraged making a pretty good duo. Taking 10, 15 minutes or 2 hours a day here and there - to sit down with a pen in hand lettering up a design or tag can actually be your way of practising mindful calligraphy. Practising needn't be for hours on end seeking this inner peace everyone is after. Take and make time for well-being and see how you can learn something new and actually rather aesthetically pleasing.

As a general overview, mindfulness focuses on being in the present moment more often, taking it steady and self-appreciation, no need to worry about the laundry - all about the now and what you’re doing in this present moment.

This works great with calligraphy as learning to letter requires a fair bit of concentration to get the hang of this new skill and if you’ve ever tried your hand at calligraphy you’ll know that you physically have to slow down your pace or the pen will be too scratchy on the paper - so it has a great dual purpose. Also, as this is something new and calligraphy can’t be mastered in afternoon, we take a laid back approach to this art form - nice and easy is a good way to be when we're lettering.

Take pleasure in seeing your development and your own style come through in your designs - no need to be 100% precise with exact repetition and mirroring of each and every letter as that’s what a computer is for! Enjoy your mindful calligraphy and you'll start to unwind.

Mindful Calligraphy & Lettering workshops with Mellor & Rose in Lancashire/ Yorkshire/ Merseyside

MINDFUL CALLIGRAPHY QUICK TIP

When sitting down and getting your pen and ink out - have something in mind, doesn't have to be drawn out exact in your mind but a glimpse of something you’re keen to get down on the paper - lay out your spacing and then simply have a go. Focus on the pen gliding on the paper (this gives a great indicator of your pace and how you’re angling the pen too).

• steady your breathing

Wedding Calligraphy workshops

Wedding Calligraphy workshops

Join us and learn how to write in this lovely (and versatile) lettering style. Wedding’s today are becoming much more personalised to the bride and groom - adding your very own calligraphy will make your stationery truly yours. Not only does Modern Calligraphy look rather gorgeous on your Wedding stationery, it’s also great fun to do! Whether you love all things stationery, a bride-to-be or just need a little break from all the tech that surrounds us - Modern Calligraphy is relaxing to learn and gives us a chance to focus on creating some lovely lettering.

We'll begin the 3 hour workshop with our usual introduction to Calligraphy similar to our Beginners workshop and whilst we work through the upper and lower alphabets and as our confidence grows we'll start to look at Wedding themed designs and pieces.  We'll ensure plenty of one to one time as with anything new, a skill can't be fully mastered in an afternoon, but you'll have learnt all solid technique in the workshop and with practice here and there plus putting your own spin on your designs you'll be producing lovely lettering for any occasion.

By the end of the Wedding workshop; we'll have covered all the fundamentals of this modern lettering style with a dip pen for you to then letter up your very own stationery pieces using the techniques we've covered and not forgetting perhaps one of the most important aspects of lettering; spacing and layout.

As the first section of the session is a Beginners workshop - no previous experience with lettering is needed as we'll be starting from the very beginning to get our eye in and if you've been to one of our Beginners workshops we'll be getting back into the swing of things plus an alternative alphabet for you.

Our usual calligraphy Starter Kit of dip pen, nib, upper and lower alphabet, practice design layout sheets is included to work our lettering to varying scales and not only only a straight line to bring in more design elements!
