POST 31 // MINDFUL CALLIGRAPHY
Mindful Calligraphy with Lucy Mellor
by Lucy Mellor
Today we're talking about Mindful Calligraphy.
Today we’re talking about Calligraphy and the world of Mindfulness. Mindfulness is something of a buzz word and has been for the past few years, it's something which may have seemed fluffy and intangible a while ago - something a little like meditation but not exactly…
Self care and self worth have massively been at the forefront of recent social change - taking time for ourselves and acknowledging our feelings. Mindfulness has been part of all of this from the very beginning. Mindfulness can come in a huge variety of forms, some are formal and the type of meditation we image with legs crossed and looking for that inner zen. Mindfulness can also be in any form we fancy, it can be simply putting on our favourite music and going for a stroll with the dog - far from the ancient meditation we see on films with monks. I kind of think this is why, mindfulness is so popular. We may even be doing it and not even realise, it’s nice in that sense because it all happens organically.
For us, as Calligraphers and a family who enjoys living in the moment, Mindfulness works well. Over the past few years, we have been looking into the world of Mindfulness, not only for our own personal use and benefit but also understanding how it all works, what it’s all about and if it may just be some sort of fad - which it most definitely isn’t. Living in a world of kale salad and fad diets, we’re all a little sceptic of things like this. However, when we take a look and have a go ourselves, we learn something new and something which can do us some good - I’m all for that!
We may even be practising Mindfulness and not even realise, it’s nice in that sense because it all happens organically.
To provide a this a little context… we host Calligraphy and Lettering Workshops and up until the Coronavirus, we hosted in-person Workshops with groups of people all looking do something rather lovely and creative with a group of like minded people - that in itself is wonderful when you think about it and something we’re incredibly excited to get back to.
During our Workshops, we were kept being told how therapeutic and relaxing our Workshops were - being in the Workshop gave us permission to slow down and take us down a notch or 2. Mindful Calligraphy is certainly something we want to promote and continue to share with everyone.
If there was something which was bothering us or something lingering in the back of our minds, it gradually faded away for an hour or so as we fully immersed ourselves in the world of calligraphy and creativity. When you think about it, whenever we concentrate on something, we gain focus and other things drift away in our minds. Having a hobby or learning a new skill is wonderful for make sure we have enough me time and also gives a bit of perspective. Mindful Calligraphy may be your practice of Mindfulness and if it is, that's wonderful. For me personally, practising Mindful Calligraphy here and there does me a world of good and if this has a chance of doing the same for you, then we're smiling!
