We were incredibly excited during our drive up to Clitheroe earlier this week to host our first Modern Calligraphy workshop at Mitton Hall; one of Ribble Valley's finest and most beautiful wedding venues.
We had all our gear, chalkboards, picture frames and perhaps just under 100 pieces of paper (seriously. no joke.) for our upcoming Modern Wedding Calligraphy workshop at Mitton Hall in Clitheroe, Ribble Valley. We were very much looking forward to our workshop as we'd been at Holmes Mill the previous week hosting mini calligraphy and lettering demo's for everyone and anyone passing by during the Wedding Showcase - so this really got us in the Wedding spirit! This was our second workshop in Clitheroe as we hosted our Christmas Calligraphy workshop at Holmes Mill last year in the stunning Food Hall.
Whilst at Mitton Hall - I had a wander around the grounds at it was a lovely evening with glorious light - which made the evening's session even that more ambient and only slow dimming later on in the evening when we were finishing up.

In our 3 hour Modern Calligraphy workshop at Mitton Hall, we covered all the basics of handletttering; learning the fundamentals and understanding the varying pressures and pace to achieve this characteristic lettering style we see on so much beautiful wedding stationery. We started with the upper and lower alphabet to learn the shapes of the letter which prides us with the base for you to put your own spin on the designs. From here, once we got the hang of things and our confidence grew from first picking up the dip pen - we gradually processed onto the wedding themed lettering, designs and stationery items which focused on joining up the individual letters and introducing layout to lettering - as lettering and calligraphy isn't only perfecting that same letter over and over again.
We then looked at bigger designs on A4 sheers which are great for signs and boards can the basis of larger lettering can lead to more scaled up designs which can be accompanied by a table plan or order of the day.
There really is no limit to what you can get up to with lettering - we're never limited to paper; chalkboards are booming in popularity - we've been lettering on chalkboards for a while as we're big fans of white ink on dark card/ board (that contrast!) and unpainted wood is making a surge too! If you're planning on writing your own wedding stationery we have a number Modern Wedding Calligraphy workshops coming up across the North West.
